Simple practical projects to improve your sewing machine skills. Tutor: Tara Henshaw, Thursdays, 6.30-8.30pm

Open Is this course right for me?

Offering a natural progression from the Beginners Machine Sewing course. If you have basic sewing machine skills and can confidently thread up a machine, wind a bobbin and construct a simple item such as a bag or cushion cover, this course would be right for you.

Open What will I learn?

How to sew and seams, hems, insert zips, buttons and buttonholes. How to follow templates and simple commercial patterns. How to use the machine for decorative techniques, such as piping, gathering and applique. How to construct a small item of clothing or accessory.

In a small group we will look at examples and experiment with techniques before working on your own choice of product. Step by step demonstrations and guidance will be provided from your tutor.

You will not gain a formal qualification however you can request a Certification of Achievement from your tutor at the end of the course.

You may wish to join another Sewing class or move on to Dressmaking.

Open Please bring

You will need to bring your own basic sewing kit including scissors (fabric and paper), tape measure, pins, needles, sewing thread, needle threader and stitch unpicker. You will also need to bring some fabric for sampling and later some fabric of your choice for your product. Your tutor will recommend fabric type and length in the first session depending on your choice of product. If you have your own machine please bring to each session where possible. It is best to learn on your own machine to become familiar with it for future projects. If you don’t have a machine or are unable to bring one with you please let us know in advance so that we can supply one for you.
