If you have no or little experience with a sewing machine and wish to learn and develop basic sewing skills.

Open What will I learn?

How to use a sewing machine with confidence – sewing machine features, threading your machine, bobbin winding and threading, stitch types, machine needles and feet. How to cut and construct a cushion cover and /or tote bag. By the end of the course, you will have a good understanding of how the sewing machine works and developed your knowledge of techniques for future projects on the machine.

Open How will I learn?

Through tutor demonstrations and guidance, working at your own pace to develop skills techniques to achieve your goals. Learners will produce a range of samples for future reference.

Open Will I gain a qualification?

You will not gain a formal qualification however you can request a Certification of Achievement from your tutor at the end of the course.

You may wish to further develop your skills by enrolling on an improvers machine sewing course in the future.

Open Please bring

You will need to bring your own basic sewing kit including; scissors (fabric & paper), tape measure, pins, sewing needles, thread & stitch unpicker. You will also need to bring some fabric for sampling (could be scrap fabric) and some fabric of your choice for your cushion or bag. Your tutor will recommend fabric type and length at your first session. If you have your own machine please bring to each session where possible. It is best to learn on your own machine to become familiar with it for future projects. If you don’t have a machine or are unable to bring one with you please let us know in advance so that we can supply one for your use at the centre.
