Course Overview
Learn how to work with glass, designing and making your own creations using lead came or copper foil. Tutor will charge separately for materials. Thursdays 7-9pm
The course is for anyone who has an interest in stained glass techniques and/or beginners looking for a new creative hobby that is both rewarding and therapeutic, learning in a social, supportive, and relaxed environment. No previous knowledge or experience needed.
Prosp Is This Right For Me
Beginners: Gain knowledge and practical experience of a range of glass techniques used to design and make 2D glass items; Explore the different tooling, materials and techniques used for making stained glass items together with their qualities; Cover health and safety procedures relevant to the craft and techniques; Learn about the use of colour, line and texture to inform the design of stained glass items; Make two introductory 2D stained glass items, a leaded came panel and copper foil suncatcher. Materials will be provided for these by the tutor at a cost of £20. After completing your 2D stained glass items, you may have time to design and make your own individual stained glass item(s) at extra cost. This can be based on a seasonal theme. Improvers:
Those with experience will have the choice of constructing any of the two introductory 2D stained glass items above and/or design and make your own individual stained glass items, with full tutor support, further developing your knowledge and practical experience of a range of glass techniques used to design and make 2D and 3D items.
Prosp What Will I Learn
The tutor will provide small group demonstrations of the techniques, tooling, materials and equipment used in the design and making of stained glass items such as panels, sun catchers, lamp shades, wall lights, mirrors, terrariums, clocks, boxes etc. The relevant techniques are further developed through practical exercises, sampling and the construction of your own individual item(s) where you can work at your own level and pace. Beginners and Improvers will be encouraged to keep a portfolio of work and a reflective diary, as a fundamental part of the creative and assessment process.
Prosp How Will I Learn
You will not gain a formal qualification but you may request a Certificate of Achievement from your tutor.
Prosp Qualification
Community Learning MK is planning future courses in the design and making of 2D and 3D creative glasswork items. Your tutor will be able to give you specific information about any of these day and evening courses.
Prosp Next Steps
For the first session it is not necessary to bring anything as glass, tools and equipment are provided for the initial introductory glass cutting exercises. However, a fee will be required to cover the cost of any materials provided by the tutor for making the two introductory items (leaded came panel and copper foiled suncatcher). Please bring £20 to cover this cost which is payable directly to the tutor at the beginning of the first session. To plan, design and make your own individual items, you will need to purchase your own materials but will have the use of tools and equipment. Some basic materials may be purchased directly from your tutor. If you are in possession of safety glasses you may like to bring these with you. Please note that the solder and came you use contains lead. You may wish to bring cotton gloves to protect your hands when handling it, although vinyl gloves are available at the centre.
