Course Overview
This course is for absolute beginners and those with a little knowledge, Thursdays, 7-8.30pm
This course is intended for anyone who wishes to develop their lip-reading skills, and improve communication affected by hearing loss. The course, building on knowledge and understanding, will cover a range of subjects including: lipreading theory and practice, finger spelling, tactics for managing hearing loss in everyday life, and will give the opportunity to practise lip-reading in a safe, positive environment.
Prosp Is This Right For Me
By the end of the course, you should be able to: list consonant confusion groups and identify visible and less visible shapes, recognise specific lip shapes in eyedrill, sentences/prose and running speech, explain the psychological impact of acquired hearing loss/deafness, apply finger spelling alphabet to support communication.
Prosp What Will I Learn
The tutor provides voiced and devoiced presentations, discussion and demonstration, group and pair work. There will be opportunities at every session to practise lip-reading skills. Resources will include worksheets and handouts. Individual communication needs will be taken into account at all times.

You will not gain a formal qualification but you may receive a Certificate of Attendance from your tutor.

You may want to progress to Lip-reading Improvers and explore more complex issues around lipreading and communication.

You will need a small mirror and a pen and paper every week.
